NETWORKING PAGE

My experience in building and maintaining computer networks is fairly extensive. I worked in Tulane Universities' MTC (Management Technology Center) in the summer of 1999 till I graduated in May of 2000. The preceding is just a fancy way of saying that I helped support a 100+ station Windows NT 4 network. I later built and supported my own Win 2000 (IIS) web server over my home DSL line for a couple of years. I have now graduated to the cheaper and more stable Linux, specifically Red Hat 9.0/Fedora Core 4. I have been running this platform for the last 2 years and am very comfortable with it. I also know how to configure basic firewalls (Cisco PIX 501,Linksys, D-Link) and have some experience with others (SysMaster). You can click on the links below for a more detailed description of my experience and thoughts on each different platform.

Wintel

The Windows/Intel environment affectionately known as Wintel, is the proverbial 500 pound gorilla that dominates the world's desktops. As any good former support guy, I'm intimately familiar with this environment. I also use this enviroment for most of my personal computing.

Linux

Linus Torvaldes, Wired Magazine's proclaimed "leader of the free world" gave us the first Linux Kernel and is still an interregnal part of its present and future. The advantages in security, stability, and price have made me a believer in the use of this platform to run most of my servers. I must admit though Big Bill still owns my desktop, and no offense to Mandrake or other Linux desktop contenders, but they still don't match up to Microsoft's Windows.
